My PS5 shouldn't have to be factory reset just because a brand new PS5 exclusive froze on me. Overall, Returnal is a fun game from Housemarque, but holy crap am I upset at this situation. So now I'm stuck re-downloading all of my previous games for a while, AND I lost my save file for Returnal, as it hadn't synced with PlayStation Plus's servers yet. The only choice I had now was to factory reset my launch day PS5 and hope Returnal didn't fully brick my console.Īnd it worked! But now all of my game installs and data on my PS5 were wiped clean due to the factory reset. I tried rebuilding my PS5's database, clearing the cache, and other non-nuclear options. I then powered into safe mode to fix this situation.

Nope again, turns out my situation got worse! My PS5 started doing the blue light of death, essentially meaning the system software was corrupted. After waiting another ten minutes to no avail, I decided to power off my PS5 and then turn it back on. So after waiting 10 minutes on the frozen screen in-game, I returned to the PS5 menu to quit the game out manually.īut nope, that didn't work at all, as it caused my PS5 to then be stuck on the closing game waiting screen. Oddly enough, the PS5 wouldn't crash out to the home screen with an error message during the freeze, like it usually does. As I was starting Act 2, the game froze on me, ultimately leading to my console almost getting bricked.

Housemarque has gone to great lengths to immerse players in this setting.

I was playing Returnal earlier this morning and just finished my first successful run-through of Act 1. Returnal makes the most compelling case for the PS5’s tech we’ve seen yet.
